* Do you know what the CNAME record is?

Suggested article from our blog: What is a CNAME record?

The CNAME record, also known as “canonical” record is a type of DNS record that maps an alias name to a true or canonical domain name. It is one of the most commonly used DNS record types.

Example for DNS CNAME record

It is important to remember that The CNAME Record is used only for subdomains. You can't add any other records for a given hostname if this hostname has a CNAME Record.

Here you can find two of the most common uses of CNAME records:

  • Providing a separate hostname for specific network services (FTP, email, etc.), and pointing that hostname to the root domain
  • Pointing from several websites owned by the same organization to a primary website

Don’t forget that it's impossible to create a CNAME record if there are any other records for this hostname.
